We had originally intended to give this concert in May of 2020, but the virus had other plans, so we’ve rescheduled it as the first concert of the 2021-2022 season instead. Our plan is to present music about “roundness” in the Middle Ages & Renaissance. The idea for the theme was loosely inspired by the first written description of a merry-go-round at a fair in the year 1620. Our program will include musical rounds as well as music with other references to “roundness”—things like the Wheel of Fortune (not the TV show!), wool-spinning, windmills, dances with whirling steps, billiard balls and drunken reeling.

Our Christmas concerts will include a variety of musical selections from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, interspersed with excerpts from period literary works brought to life by Kathy Wimmer. We will be dedicating this program to our friend and colleague Phil Bock, who passed away this summer. Phil was our Christmas concert narrator for many years and also performed with us in the roles of King Henry VIII and the trouvère Gaucelm de Faidit.

Our third subscription concert, in March of 2022, will feature music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance about famous couples from mythology and history. Robin and Marion, Abelard and Heloise, Gayferos and Melisenda, Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII, Petrarch and Laura, Fauvel and Dame Fortune, and Marguerite of Austria and Philibert of Savoy are a few of those whose stories you may encounter in this program.

Mankind seems always to have associated colors with specific concepts, even though the meanings vary from culture to culture and across time. In the Western tradition, white often stands for purity and innocence, black for death or evil, gold for glory, blue for truth or peace, green for renewal and fertility, and purple for royalty. Concert IV will explore a variety of musical examples from the Middle Ages and Renaissance that make reference to colors.
